In the Bible, the heart is the core place of a person that determines and drives their whole life. The human heart is by nature sinful and inclined to go its own way rather than the way of Christ. God can change our hearts and incline them toward Christ. He does so by the power of his Spirit and Word. Let us pray for and pursue the miracle of a deep affection for Christ.

When we open the Bible, we ask the Lord to revive us according to his word. We seek his grace for awakened, enlightened, and energized minds and hearts to follow Christ. This is our prayer for ourselves, for our congregation, and for those we know who have yet to come to faith in Christ.

Psalm 119 contains prayers to God for his work of grace in the life of his child. The psalmist is asking God to do something within him so that he may see, love, and keep God’s word. Jesus said that all Scripture speaks of him. So, Psalm 119 becomes the disciple’s prayer. Our first prayer is that God would open our eyes to see Jesus Christ in the Bible.

Every hard word of rebuke that the LORD speaks to his people comes with a loving call to return to him. The evidence that the people have gone away from the LORD is laid out before them. They are cynical, claiming that there is no benefit in serving the LORD and keeping his commands. They are selfish, withholding their tithes and offerings. The LORD rebukes them for their short-sighted and selfish understanding of his covenant with them. He calls them to return in their hearts to love him by honoring him with their money. He promises to receive them and to care for them.
