Speaker: Marshall Albritton
Peter warns his readers about the presence of false teachers in the Church. Peter describes their error, tactics, and effect on the Church. Peter also writes about the future judgment of those who would bring false teaching into the Church. There are two lessons for us. We should not be forgetful or naïve. And we also should not despair, for God is in control.

All of Scripture has been given through divine inspiration by the Holy Spirit. God has given us this gift as a light in our dark world, showing us which way to go. Christians are called to pay close attention to Scripture, building our lives on its truth as we wait for Jesus to return.

At the end of the Apostle Peter’s first letter to the churches we hear the great promise that gives us hope in our present suffering. As sojourners in this world, our suffering comes in many forms. In this passage, the suffering is in the form of ongoing attacks and accusations of the devil that we must regularly resist by faith. The hope we have lies in the promise that our suffering here will give way to the work of God in our lives that will lead to the final state of shared glory with Christ our Savior. Let this promise pull you forward in faith and faithfulness to him.

The command to humble ourselves is based on the promise that God gives grace to those who do so. Humility is a posture of mind and heart that is consistent with the reality that God is Lord. It is an attitude toward God and others. It positions us to receive from the Lord the grace we need to sojourn together in this world. Let us humble ourselves before the Lord and toward each other.

“Feed my sheep,” Jesus said to Peter just before he ascended into heaven. Peter carried out his ministry to the sojourning and suffering congregations with these words ringing in his ears. Now, he is passing the exhortation on to elders who will do the same. In this passage, the elders are told what to do, and the spirit in which they are to do it. They are reminded that they serve the chief Shepherd, Jesus. The congregation hears the message to the elders and joins them in prayer, humility, and cooperation for the glory of God.
