The work of Christ will continue until he returns. He has given his Spirit to his church to be his witnesses in the world. The Book of Acts is the history of Christ’s work in the decades after the cross and resurrection. It ends with the Apostle Paul in prison, but the gospel going forth unhindered. The message to us is to continue on with Christ, in Christ, for the sake of Christ’s glory today.

Discipleship did not end when Jesus was crucified. Jesus was raised from the dead and is alive. He has gathered and commissioned his disciples who follow him today. Our discipleship continues as we follow Jesus filled with his Spirit, as individuals who now form a church, and in specific locations as the gospel goes to all the world. Today, as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to walk with him.

The most important part of Jesus’ call to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him, is that he is the one who is calling. Disciples come to see who Jesus is, and they follow him as he is. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, our Savior and Lord, is standing before us bidding us to come and follow him. He makes the self-denial and cross bearing worth it. May we love and value him above all.

In this encounter with religious leaders, Jesus teaches us that discipleship is not a matter of keeping traditions established by man for the purpose of establishing and maintaining a relationship with God. Discipleship is obedience to God’s word that comes from a heart of love for him. This encounter also reveals our need for a Savior to cleanse our hearts and make them new so we can follow Christ. Christ is our Savior. May we follow him as Lord.
